Glutathione: Synthesis and Supplementation Strategies for the Body's Master Antioxidant

Glutathione (GSH) is the body's most critical endogenous antioxidant, playing a key role in detoxification, immune function, and antioxidant defense. Liposomal technology and NAC precursor supplementation are two primary strategies to boost intracellular GSH levels.

Glutathione: Strategies for Synthesis and Supplementation of the Body's Master Antioxidant

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Found in every human cell at concentrations ranging from 1 to 1 mM, GSH is known as the "master antioxidant." It plays an indispensable role in antioxidant defense, detoxification (as a substrate for Phase II conjugation reactions), immune regulation (T-cell function), and protection of protein thiols.

GSH synthesis is limited by cysteine availability—cysteine is the least stable of the three amino acids and the rate-limiting factor. With aging, chronic stress, toxin exposure, and malnutrition, intracellular GSH levels drop significantly, leading to increased oxidative stress and declining immune function.

Direct oral GSH faces absorption challenges: it is broken down into amino acids by γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in the gut. Liposomal encapsulation protects GSH within a phospholipid bilayer, shielding it from enzymatic degradation and significantly improving bioavailability. Multiple clinical studies confirm that liposomal GSH effectively raises GSH levels in red blood cells and lymphocytes.

Another strategy is to supplement with NAC (N-acetylcysteine), a GSH precursor. As a stable form of cysteine, NAC offers high oral bioavailability and converts intracellularly into cysteine for GSH synthesis. Additionally, NAC acts as a mucolytic agent and heavy metal chelator, delivering multiple health benefits.

Dynas Group (Hong Kong) offers two GSH-boosting solutions in the Immune Resilience Series: Liposomal Glutathione and NAC. We also provide a triple-amino acid complex (GSH synthesis trifecta) combining NAC, Glycine, and Glutamine. Customization is available for both capsules and powders.
