What's the difference between Functional Food OEM and ODM? How should brands choose the right collaboration model?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) involves a brand providing the formula for contract manufacturing, while ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) entails the manufacturer designing the formula for the brand to rebrand. These models differ significantly in intellectual property rights for formulas, R&D costs, time-to-market, and use cases. Functional medicine brands should select the optimal collaboration model based on their R&D capabilities and market positioning.

What's the difference between Functional Food OEM and ODM? How should brands choose the right collaboration model?

When functional food brands seek contract manufacturing, the first decision is: OEM or ODM? These models differ fundamentally in intellectual property ownership of formulas, R&D cost allocation, time-to-market, and brand differentiation. Understanding this distinction is the first step for brands to make the right partnership decision.

In the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) model, the brand owner holds the proprietary formula and contracts a manufacturer to produce according to that formula. The brand retains full intellectual property rights over the formulation, while the manufacturer is responsible solely for production and quality control. This model suits brands with in-house R&D teams or expertise in functional medicine—those who have a clear logic for their product pathways and require manufacturers to strictly adhere to the specified standards. Key advantages include complete autonomy over the formula and high product differentiation; disadvantages involve significant upfront R&D investment and longer validation cycles for formulations.

In the ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) model, contract manufacturers handle formula design and product development, while brands select formulas from the manufacturer's catalog for private-label sales. This model suits brands lacking an R&D team but possessing strong market channels and brand operations—they can quickly launch products using the manufacturer's proven formulas. Key advantages include fast time-to-market (typically 4-8 weeks to ship) and low R&D costs; a drawback is that formulas may be shared across multiple brands, limiting product differentiation.

Functional Medicine Brand Selection Strategy: If the brand is founded by a functional medicine practitioner or health manager with synergistic formulas based on the Seven Imbalances Framework, choose OEM. The core competitiveness of functional medicine products lies in formula precision and pathway synergy logic; generic formulas are not suitable. If the brand is an e-commerce cross-border seller or health management institution aiming to launch a product line quickly, choose ODM. Select clinically validated formulas from the manufacturer's mature library to rapidly build your product matrix.

Hong Kong Dina Group offers both OEM and ODM collaboration models. Under the OEM model, we provide confidentiality agreements for formulas, raw material traceability, and strict quality control. In the ODM model, we offer a mature library of formulations based on the Seven Imbalances Framework of Functional Medicine, complete with mechanism white papers and clinical evidence; brand owners can select formulas for private-label customization. Regardless of the model, we support full-dosage production including soft capsules, hard capsules, tablets, powders, liquid oral solutions, drops, and nutritional gummies, with minimum order quantities starting from just a few thousand bottles.
